Configuration Options Available

The GasFinder3-MCr Assembly has the following configurable options:

  • Number of Channels: The GasFinder3-MCr can be configured for Two (2), Four (4), Eight (8) Channels.
  • Target Gas #1 (and #2): Select both the Target Gas and Range appropriate for the application.
  • Cable Connections: There are two options: CAT6/5e Cables for GasFinder3 Measurement Heads (CAT) or Coaxial Cable for GasFinder2 Measurement Heads (BNC).
  • Analog Modules: Determine if Four (A4) or Eight (A8) Analog Loops are Required.
  • Relay Modules: Determine if Six (R6), Twelve (R12), Eighteen (R18), Twenty-Four (R24), Thirty (30), or Thirty-Six (36) Relays are required.

    End-of-Life Notice

    GasFinder2 Technology Platform

    The GasFinder2 Technology Platform is no longer promoted, quoted, or sold by Boreal Laser.

    The transition away from GasFinder2 Technology Platform Products is a result of obsolescence of many key analog electronic components.

    However, Boreal Laser will continue to provide Full Technical Support and Services on GasFinder2 Technology Platform based products through either the end of 2023 or 7-years after the date of purchase.

    Beyond this date, Boreal Laser will continue to provide Technical Support and Services on GasFinder2 products as follows:

    If a system is operational, we shall continue to provide standard check-up and calibration services.

    If a system is non-operational, we shall carry out diagnostic and troubleshooting:

    If we can repair the GasFinder, we shall do so at standard service rates, and return the unit.

    If we cannot repair the GasFinder2 product due to non availability of required parts, then replacement by an equivalent GasFinder3 product will be recommended.

    Like In-Kind Replacement

    Upgrade to the GasFinder3-MCr

    The End-of-Life’d GasFinder2-MC (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) Analyzers can easily be upgraded with the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) :

    • Use Existing Infrastructure: Items such as the Measurement Head Assemblies (e.g. Cabling, OP3 Heads, and Retro-Reflectors), Server Cabinets, Power/Communication Wiring, and Mounting Structures can all be re-used resulting in an easy and economical upgrade.

     

    • HMI Touchscreen: With the GasFinder2-MC (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel), technicians would need to use the Push Button LCD Display or GasView (Window Based Software) as an interface with the system. With the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel), there is a intuitive HMI Touchscreen that provides full interface capabilities to configuring the system.

     

    • Reduced Foot Print:
      • Consolidated Modules: The other Rack Mounted Modules such as the RF Barrier (provides Intrinsic Safety for Measurement Heads used in Hazardous Areas) and Modbus Module are now built-in to the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) Analyzer.
      • Enhanced Analog and Relay Modules: Din-Rail mounted Analog Modules and Relay Modules enables for easy installation and use. New features include HART 7 (over 4-20mA) that enable the Light Level (Rx) and R2 Confidence Factor (R2) variable to be used over the digitized Secondary Variable (SV) and Tertiary Variable (TV). End-Users can now implement Beam Block Time Delays from 0-300 Seconds to minimize nuisance Beam Block Alarms.
      • Data Storage Capabilities: Unlike the GasFinder2-MC (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) Analyzer which required an external data logger (i.e. Windows Based Computer), the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) TDL Analyzer has integrated Data Storage. Not only is all of the generated data automatically logged but it is easily accessible with a USB Thumb Drive.

     

    • Measurement Head Modification: The GasFinder2 Based Measurement Heads (e.g. OP3 Head, V1 Duct Probe, etc.) will require a modification to be used with the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) TDL Analyzer. To perform these modifications, there are three available options:
      • Measurement Head Exchange: Modified Measurement Heads (i.e. Suitable for use with the GasFinder3-MCr) can be shipped to your location to be exchanged with your current Measurement Heads.
      • Return Measurement Heads to the Factory: Your Measurement Heads can be returned to the Factory to be modified, tested, and returned.
      • On-Site Modifications by Factory Authorized Technician: These modifications can take place at your facility but will need to be done by a Factory Authorized Technician.

     

    • Potential Installation Upgrades:
      • Expand # channels: existing 4-channel GasFinder2-MC installations can be upgraded with 8-channel GasFinder3-MCr analyzers to enable additional measurements.
      • Dual Gas Capability: the GasFinder3-MCr is capable of monitoring two gases with the same analyzer. Hence, a second available gas measurement may be added to existing installations during a GasFinder2-MC replacement / upgrade.

     

    Using Existing Measurement Heads

    Only a Small Modification Required

    You can re-use your existing GasFinder2 Based Measurement Heads but there will need to be a small modification made and this can be done in three (3) different ways:

    • Option #1 – Measurement Head Exchange: To minimize downtime, we can send you already modified Measurement Heads that you can swap with the existing.
    • Option #2 – Modification Done at Factory: You can remove your existing Measurement Heads and ship them to our Factory where we will make the modifications and we’ll ship them back to you.
    • Option #3 – On-Site Modification: You can remove the Measurement Heads and we can perform the modification to the Measurement Heads in your Maintenance Shop.

    The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) provides you with the following advantages:

    • Hazardous Area Use: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) has been certified for use in (A) Ex ib IIC T5 Tamb <70C Gb. Which is equivalent to Class 1, Division/Zone 1, Groups: A, B, C, D. This product is also suitable for use within SIL2 Applications.
    • Use up to Eight (8) Measurement Heads: Any of the six (6) available Remotely Mounted Measurement Heads can be used with the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel). Each Measurement Head or Channel is treated independently and will have its own independent outputs.
    • Dual Gas Capability: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) has the ability to have any two (2) lasers be used for the independent analysis of two separate target gases.
    • Up to 300m (1,000ft) Cable Lengths: To connect the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) to the Measurement Heads, up to 300m (1,000ft) of Single Mode Fiber Optic Cabling (FC/APC Connectors) and Shielded CAT6/5e Cabling (RJ45 Connectors) can be used.

    Overview of Enclosure Assembly

    The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) provides you with the following advantages:

    • Power Input + Fused Protection: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) is powered by 120-220 VAC with a Field Replaceable Fuse (1.25A Fast Blow Fuse).
    • Communication Options: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) has the following Communication Output Options: HART 7 (over Analog), Relay Outputs, and MODBUS (RS-485).
    • Single Mode Fiber Optic Cabling: The Single Mode Fiber Optic Cabling (FC/APC Connectors) carries the Laser Light to the Measurement Head.
    • Shield CAT6/5e or Coaxial Cabling: Either Shielded CAT6/5e Cabling (RJ45 Connectors) for GasFinder3 Measurement Heads or Coaxial Cabling (BNC Connectors) for GasFinder2 Measurement Heads are used to return the signal from the Measurement Head to GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) for analysis.

    Use and Function

    The HMI Touchscreen provides you with the following advantages:

    • Provides Valuable Local Indication: Gone are the days of requiring a Laptop or a Hand Held Communicator to install or support end-devices. The HMI Touchscreen provides operations with Local Indication and enables Technicians to have full access to a intuitive User Interface.
    • Enables Intuitive Local Interface: The HMI Touchscreen provides technicians will full functionality that includes access to information, configurations, and commands.
    • Data Logger is no Longer Required: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) has the ability to store all of its generated data over its entire lifespan. This is easily accessible via a FAT32 USB Thumb Drive or Memory Stick. The system automatically bins the Logfiles into time stamped 24 hour periods. The Logfiles are in CSV Format and can easily be visualized with our Excel Macro.
    • Use in Hot and Cold Applications: The Display and Touchscreen functions work throughout the ambient temperature range of -55 to 65°C (-67 to 149°F).

     

    Local Indication Display Options

    The Field Mounted GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) provides you with the following advantages:

    • Graphical Display: This display option is typically used if trending the concentration variables is of use to operations.
    • Numerical Display (Single Channel): This high contrast display is often the display of choice for leak detection applications as it shows the status of the Hi and Hi-Hi Alarm Relays.
    • Numerical Display (Multi-Channel): At a glance, operations will have a good indication of the concentrations at each path and the customizable naming for each channel will easily help identify which path/channel is being used.

    Overview of the Temperature Control

    The Field Mounted GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) provides you with the following advantages:

    • Ready for Hot and Cold Applications: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) can be installed throughout the world and handle almost any ambient temperature with an operating temperature range of -55 to 65ºC (-67 to 149°F). The Measurement Head and Active Measurement Path (i.e. Laser Beam) can handle wider temperature ranges than the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel).
    • ±2% of Reading Accuracy: Boreal Laser offers best-in-class performance with ±2% of Reading Accuracy. Particularly for Open Path Gas Detection, all of the other leak detection devices will have ±5% of Full Scale, which is not not very accurate at all…
    • No Diurnal or Seasonal Drift: Laser Based Gas Analysis is sensitive to temperature changes but thanks to the Patented Dual Zone Temperature Control, the GasFinder3-MCr in a variety of ambient temperature conditions without the need for intervention or degradation of accuracy. There are built-in pressure and temperature sensors within the GasFinder3-MCr than can aid in compensating for changing temperatures over diurnal (day/night) and seasonal periods.
    • Optional P+T Analog Inputs: If the environment of Measurement Head differs from that of the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel), then the End-User can input Pressure + Temperature (P+T)  analog variables from external measurement instrumentation to enable Dynamic P+T Compensation.

    Overview of the Internal Reference Cell(s)

    The Internal Reference Cell(s) within the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) provides you with the following advantages:

    • Fail Safe Design + SIL2 Suitability: Boreal Laser has focused exclusively on Laser Based Gas Analysis since 1990 and has built an analyzer with +30 years of expertise to provide a Fail Safe instrument that employs detailed diagnostics to help increase the confidence of both technicians and operations. If the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) is running without fault or status inhibition codes, then the system can be trusted to work as there are no undisclosed failure modes.
    • Essentially Zero Measurement Drift: The Internal Reference Cell ensures that the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) is still emitting Laser Light at the appropriate wavelength/frequency required to detect that particular target gas. By remaining “Line Locked” or “Line Centered”, we can essentially eliminate Measurement Drift and the requirement for routine intervention and calibration.
    • No Field Calibration: In addition to the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) interrogating its Internal Reference Cell every minute, the system also compares itself against the permanently stored calibration waveform each and every sample to ensure that the most accurate measurement possible is being made.
    • No Field Intervention: There is no end-user intervention required as all the checks and adjustments from the Internal Reference Cell are done autonomously and automatically. Beyond Optical Alignment of the Measurement Heads, there are no field adjustments to be made with the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel).

     

    Viewing Status of Internal Reference Cell

    Via the HMI Touchscreen, press Settings>System Parameters>Page 3/3>Reference Check.

    The Detailed Diagnostics and Fail-Safe Design will automatically initiate a Fault Condition if the Internal Reference Cell does not meet the quality requirements pre-programmed into the system.

    Overview of Inputs and Outputs

    Here is a more detailed overview of the Power + Communication Options available with the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) :

    • Relay Outputs:
      • In addition to the one (1) Discrete Output from the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel), there are more available through what we call a Relay Module.
      • Each Relay Module has six (6) Voltage Free Dry-Contact Relays Outputs. The GasFinder3-MCr can support up to six (6) Relay Modules.
      • Via the HMI Touchscreen, the end-user can easily configure if the Relay Output should be a Hi Alarm, Hi-Hi Alarm, Low Light (i.e. Beam Block), or General Fault.
    • HART 7 over Analog:
      • In addition to the one (1) HART 7 over Analog Output from the GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel), there are more available through what we call an Analog Module.
      • Each Analog Module has four (4) HART 7 over Analog Outputs. The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) can support up to Two (2) Analog Modules. Via the HMI Touchscreen, the end-user can easily configure what each Analog Loop will output such as: Path Integrated Concentration (ppm-m), Path Average Concentration (ppm),  Standard Volume (mg/Nm3), Light Level (Rx), or R2 Confidence Factor (R2).
      • Each of the Loops on the Analog Module are both Isolated and Active/Source (Powered by the GasFinder).
      • There are a number of sub 4 mA variables to note: 2.7 mA = Low Light (Beam Block) and 3.6 mA = General Fault. Via HART 7, the the PV = Concentration, SV = Light Level, and TV = R2 Confidence Factor.

    • MODBUS via RS-485: Every variable generated by the analyzer are Addressable Registers.
    • Power + Cartridge Fuse: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) is powered with 120-220 VAC and under normal operation draws 20 watts. There is a field replaceable ¼” x 1-¼” 1.25A, 250V, Fast Blow Fuse.

    • Visualize Data with the Excel Marco: Easy visualize both sample and diagnostic data. Contact your representative for more information.
    • USB Accessible Data Storage: The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) has the ability to store all of its generated data over its entire lifespan. This is easily accessible via a FAT32 USB Thumb Drive or Memory Stick. The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel) automatically bins the Logfiles into timestamped 24 hour periods. The Logfiles are in CSV Format and can easily be visualized with our Excel Macro (see the Downloads sections of this webpage).
    • Micro-USB Connection: Serial connection to use GasView Software is included.

     

    Easily Access your Collected Data

    To Download the Logfiles, on the HMI Touchscreen, press Settings>Logging.

    You can download the Logfile Visualization Macro from this webpage. For each of the Measurement Heads, there have been a specific document created called Detailed Instructions that provide instructions how to use the Logfile Visualization Macro.

    The GasFinder3-MCr (Rack Mounted – Multi-Channel), which is a Laser Based – Gas Analysis/Monitoring/Detection Instrument that uses one (or sometime more) of our six (6) available Measurement Heads to formulate the Active Measurement Path to make the Gas Concentration Measurements in a variety of Industrial Hazardous Area Applications.

    Leak Detection/Ambient Monitoring

    There are a number of Measurement Heads available for use with our line of GasFinder3 Analyzer Products:

    • Open Path (OPX) Head: When combined with one of the GasFinder3 Analyzers, it creates an Open-Path Gas Detector used in Industrial Leak Detection or Ambient Monitoring Applications.
    • Remote Point (RPX) Probe: When combined with one of the GasFinder3 Analyzers, it creates a Fixed-Point Gas Detection measurement for applications that require fast speed of response or immunity to poisoning/fouling.

    In-Situ or Extractive Analytical

    There are a number of Measurement Heads available for use with our line of GasFinder3 Analyzer Products:

    • Stack/Duct (SDX) Probe: When combined with one of the GasFinder3 Analyzers, it creates a direct and non-contact measurement within a stack or duct for quantitative or feedback control applications.
    • Insertable (IPX) Probe: When combined with one of the GasFinder3 Analyzers, it creates a direct and non-contact measurement within a stack, duct, tank, or enclosure for quantitative or feedback control applications.
    • In-Line (ILX) Probe: When combined with one of the GasFinder3 Analyzers, it creates a direct and non-contact measurement directly in the piped process for quantitative or feedback control applications.
    • Extractive Measurement (EMX) Cell: When combined with one of the GasFinder3 Analyzers, it creates a direct and non-contact extractive measurement for quantitative or feedback control applications.
